DUBAI The inaugural Sand Pit run is unique in its own way. Other than allowing athletes to test their limits, the event focuses on untimed challenges helping people realise their true physical and mental abilities.

The 10-km obstacle run will be held on Friday from 8am to 4pm at Dubai’s Al Barari and is open to all men and women – they can register as individuals or as teams.

“The Sand Pit promotes a healthy lifestyle and teamwork, and encourages belief in one’s own capabilities to achieve the unexpected. We wanted to create something that was focused on health and fitness but at the same time was fun and accessible to everyone,” said Firas Masri, Co-founder and CEO of Sand Pit.

State of mind

Participants have to complete a series of 15 obstacles including several water obstacles that have been evenly spread out to keep them cool during the run.

“Everyone who participates in the event will finish the course a changed person. There’s the pride of completing a very tough challenge, the proof that limits are merely a state of mind, and even the joyful intensity that comes with the creation of bonds through adversity,” Masri said.

Asked about how the idea came about, Masri said: “My partner and I were always into health and fitness since a young age. We wanted to do something that was fun and accessible to everyone yet challenging enough for people to dig deep within themselves both mentally and physically to overcome. We thought an untimed obstacle run would be perfect, especially in a region where obstacle runs are almost non-existent.”

Masri said the response so far has been overwhelming, which is a positive sight. “We also have received some interesting entries. Our oldest participant is 50 years old. We have some crazy teams like “Sand in my pants” “Fizzy Knickers” and “What were we thinking,” he said, adding the second edition will be held on November 6.
