Dubai: Housed in a building that boasts historic Arabic architecture in the heart of Dubai Heritage Village, Barjeel Al Arab oozes traditional charm. With its typical Arabian interiors the restaurant is ideal for an iftar with Arabic and Emirati cuisine.

For starters, my companion and I were offered chicken and lentil soups with fried pita bread pieces immersed in them. The lentil soup was hot and tasty, but the chicken soup could have been a tad better. It was lukewarm and slightly bland. However, I loved their tabouleh, a mix of parsley, tomato, borghul, lemon juice and olive oil, while the fried pita bread pieces were delightfully crunchy. For mains there were ouzi (chicken and rice) and vegetarian machboos (rice cooked with onion, tomato and garlic).

The rice was a perfect blend of spices, while the ouzi was a bit mild. Dessert included baklava, basbousa and kunafa. We settled for basbousa, a traditional Middle Eastern cake, bringing our iftar to a sweet end.

Over all, I would recommend the place to anyone looking for an Arabic iftar.
