Dubai: Here’s your chance to literally observe International Women’s Day on Saturday: Watch films made by women about women this year at the inaugural World Of Women Fair Middle East. The free screenings, at Vox, Mall Of The Emirates, include Soudade Kaadan’s Looking for Pink, which explores the lives of several unconventional Syrian women, and short documentaries such as Alexis Land by Syrian-British director Mahyer Abou Matouk, which examines a compassionate view of a woman grappling with autism. Films that touch upon health, relationships, gender issues and cultural diversity will be screened.
Australian film Abalone, which examines an Aboriginal man’s battle with mental health issues; Victims of War, from Hermoine Macura, which unravels Syrian refugee stories; and How Big Is Your Love from Algerian director Fatma Zohra Zamoum, about a child and his grandmother and their unique relationship during hardships, will also be up for viewing.
Established by Women in Film & Television, New South Wales, the Middle East event is being curated by filmmaker Macura’s Straight Street Media, a UAE-based media company, in partnership with Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas.
“I am delighted to launch the first ever World of Women’s Film Fair in the Middle East on International Women’s Day. I very much hope it will create further communication and dialogue as we reach out across the region, while also offering a unique platform for up and coming directors and producers in the Arab world in the years to come,” said Macura in a statement.
