Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was the star for the hosts when Germany and Argentina met again in the 2006 quarter-finals.

The Arsenal stopper had studied Argentina’s penalty takers’ past efforts and was confident of denying them in the shootout after a 1-1 draw. He subsequently kept out Roberto Ayala and Esteban Cambiasso’s strikes and the Germans scored all of theirs to reach the last four, where they lost to Italy in extra time.

In regular time in the quarter-final, Ayala put Argentina ahead with a 49th minute header, but Miroslav Klose forced extra time with a diving header with just 10 minutes to spare.
