You may have read about something called “Netflix”, which coming to the UAE for the first time this week. We’re excited, but we’re also aware that not everyone knows exactly what it is.
To ease you along, we’ve prepared a handy guide.
Netflix is an online-only TV service. You can watch thousands of TV shows, movies, documentaries, and so much more. You pick what you want to watch and when you want to watch it, rather than adhering to the network’s schedule.
What’s more, there are no commercial breaks!
The list of shows is endless, but some popular examples include House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Better Call Saul, Fargo, Community and the new hit-show Jessica Jones.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who can afford an internet TV, then you’re ready. However if, like the rest of us, you "only" have a normal TV, you can simply plug your laptop into it via a HDMI lead. Alternatively, you can watch directly from your computer.
Depending on what package you buy, you can also watch it on your smartphone, tablet, or computer games console.
There are three packages available.
The monthly charges are: Basic $7.99 (Dh29.35), Standard $9.99 (Dh 36.70), and Premium $11.99 (Dh44).
The first month is free.
The differences between packages are how many devices you can watch shows from, with Ultra HD only being available to Premium customers.
Visit the Netflix website and select the package you want. You will need to input your credit or debit card details and create a user account.
You can cancel your monthly subscription at any time with no fear of extra charges. There is no contract so you can quite whenever you like!
Netflix is a streaming service, you are therefore streaming videos off the internet and not downloading them. So you don’t need to worry about the memory on your computer.
The minimum requirement for internet speed is 0.5 megabits per second. Any modern computer with a half-decent internet connection will cope perfectly.
Your computer needs Microsoft Silverlight to run Netflix. If you don’t have it don’t worry, you will be prompted to download the plug-in for free.
