Beauty struggles are real, particularly in this part of the world where we are constantly exposed to damage caused by harsh weather conditions and poor lifestyle habits.

What common beauty problems plague UAE residents? Reem Abou Samra, social media influencer, self-confessed beauty guru and owner of luxury beauty salon Laloge at The Address Boulevard, tells us the biggest three and what to do to lessen the damage:

Dry hair

Exposure to the sun and harsh winds can wreak havoc on your hair, said Samra. But while you can't control the weather, there are other things you might be doing that are killing your tresses but you can definitely control, she said. "Frequent washing and blow drying can do serious damage. If you have dry hair, you need to moisturise it using natural oils and use well formulated, natural conditioners," Samra suggested.

Falling hair

We normally shed 50 to 100 strands of hair every day, but if your hair fall is excessive then that is a cause for alarm. Hair fall is often the result of nutritional deficiences, such as not geting enough vitamin D.

But the common cause of falling hair among UAE residents is extreme stress, Samra said. "Everything you feel inside will affect you 100 per cent. Here, everyone has a lot of stress. There are living expenses to worry about and life is either up or down," she said.

Her personal cure for stress is drinking a lot of water and practicing yoga. "All this will increase oxygen levels in your body and help you relax and wind down," she said.

Dry scalp

Do you take long, hot showers every day or use a lot of styling products on your hair? These are some of the common culprits for dry scalp, said Samra. Dry scalp causes dry, white flakes, which is different from dandruff that causes oily and yellowish flakes.

"You get dry scalp when your skin has very little moisture. Make sure you drink plenty of water. You also need to go for cooling and moisturising treatment for your scalp," she said. When you are washing your hair, try to keep the water temperature lukewarm, and even cooler when rinsing it to avoid damage, she said. You should also avoid hair styling products that blow heat to your scalp.
