Dubai: Even though we are in the digital age, paper receipts are part and parcel of our everyday lives. For every purchase, we are issued a little white piece of paper, as proof of the transaction. Slowly and steadily, all the receipts get piled up and reach a landfill eventually.

Hence, I was pleasantly surprised to see a small box kept near the ticket counter at a Dubai Metro station that read, “Please place your receipts here”.

The receipts that are printed every time we purchase a NOL card or even reload one are collected by them and sent off for recycling.

The Metro is indeed a blessing to the common man and I would like to applaud the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the wonderful initiative taken by them towards recycling paper. I wish all the supermarkets, hypermarkets and departmental stores adopt this practice in the future. It may be a small step but this is definitely going to make Dubai a cleaner, greener and better place.
