There’s always something that I take away when I meet someone new. And thanks to my line of work, I am constantly meeting people who have something interesting and unique to offer. I may have my own perspective, but there’s always something new to learn. Last week, Soniyaa Panjabi from Illuminations invited me to meet Dr Eric Pearl, New York Times best-selling author and renowned energy healer. I listened to how he developed the ability to use energy to heal people. Today, he calls this practice Reconnective Healing and travels around the world teaching people to tap into their own natural ability to heal themselves.

I do believe that energy is all around us; it is everything we are made up of and it is the cause behind every effect we experience. Call it prana or qi, or life force, I believe that this energy extends throughout the universe. Everything is energy — the wind, the rays of the sun, even emotions. Often we can feel, but cannot touch these energies, but we can sometimes identify them. I recall saying things like “we’re aren’t on the same wavelength” or “our energies don’t match” when I can’t seem to connect with someone. Little did I realise how powerful and true that was.

If you jog your memories back to your physics class in school, you’ll remember that energy cannot be created or destroyed. But it can be unbalanced and that is where the energy healing comes in. Especially in this age of dramatic distraction and stress, more people are turning to this age-old approach and it is no surprise that energy healing today is one of the most fundamental therapies in the field of alternative medicine.

Energy healing is being taken seriously by health practitioners trained in both eastern and western modalities of medicine. A recent study found that 10 minutes of energy healing were as effective as physical therapy in improving the range of motion in people with mobility problems.

As I drove home later, I thought about all that Pearl said. “Become the healing instrument that you already are,” he said. We all have the power to heal ourselves, and that is something we need to know. And should we choose to recognise, use and train this power, we need to feel helpless no more. In healing ourselves, we can heal the world.
