There’s a new fashionista in town, and she wears the hijab.
Created by 24-year-old Nigerian medical scientist and blogger Haneefah Adam, the ‘hijarbie’ is a blue-eyed blonde Barbie with a headscarf, and an attempt at inclusivity and better representation for Muslim fashion.
While toymaker Mattel recently released a range of dolls called ‘fashionistas’, in various body types and seven different skin tones, Adam’s is the first to don a hijab.
A keen fashion enthusiast herself, Adam dresses up her dolls in chic, stylish clothes, and often has them pictured with a real person wearing the same outfit.
With over 17,500 followers on Instagram (@hijarbie), Adam said in an interview with dazeddigital.com, that she hopes creating hijabs and abayas for dolls could one day turn into a profitable business.
