Abu Dhabi: The winners of the FINA/HOSA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup’s first leg — America’s Alex Meyer and Italy’s Rachele Bruni — are due in Abu Dhabi next week for the event’s second leg.

Meyer and Bruni took the first-leg honours in Argentina and both will now compete off the Corniche on Friday, February 26 in a line-up of elite swimmers.

The FINA 10km marathon competition takes place over seven legs in some of the world’s most scenic waterways across six different countries — Argentina, the UAE, Hungary, Canada, China and Hong Kong.

The Abu Dhabi leg is brought to the UAE by Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), which has partnered FINA, the world governing body for aquatic sport, and the UAE Swimming Federation. Abu Dhabi will also host the High-Diving World Cup Competitions, featuring Olympic-calibre performances, and the FINA Open-Water Mass Participation Swim, which is open to swimmers of all ages and abilities. The three events combine to make an aquatic sports spectacular which will be staged in the waters off Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club on the Corniche Breakwater from February 26-29.

“This is a great opportunity for amateur swimmers to test their skills against the world’s best,” explained Ahmad Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Director of Marketing and Communications at ADSC. “Spectators, meanwhile, can enjoy grandstand viewing from the event village taking in the daring feats of high-diving experts — it promises to be yet another fantastic and inspiring weekend of sports entertainment in the UAE capital.”
