Dubai: Swimmers of Dubai Municipality came out on top at the end of the swimming competition as the fourth Shaikha Hind Women’s Sports Tournament entered its second week on Friday.

Jessica Katela Lopez and Grace Judith Lumbre from Dubai Municipality won the first places in the 25 metres freestyle and breaststroke, respectively.

Lumbre, who came in fourth position last year, was thrilled with her top place this time. “I have worked hard to overcome the disappointment from last year,” she told Gulf News.

“Last year’s fourth place was a real motivation for me to work even harder and achieve my goal,” added the swimmer from the lifeguard section of Dubai Municipality.

Meanwhile, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Dubai Public Prosecution continued their smooth runs in the team competitions. Dewa put themselves in pole position for the top spot in volleyball with a decisive 3-1 win against Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Thursday’s action.

With both teams coming face to face in a winner takes it all clash, it was the team from Dewa making use of the opportunities that came their way despite dropping a set to head the five-team standings. Also winning was the Dubai Public Prosecution team with a 3-0 result against Dubai Ambulance. The win keeps Public Prosecution in the hunt for the silver medal, provided they can win their next two matches against RTA and Dubai Municipality.

Dewa clinched another two wins in the basketball and handball competitions at the expense of Dubai Municipality. Dewa first defeated Dubai Municipality 30-27 in the basketball after RTA had got the better of the Supreme Committee for Legislation 70-5; while in the handball, Dewa powered their way to an 11-5 result against the Municipality side, while Dubai Public Prosecution got the better of RTA 21-8.

Action will continue at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) hall on Saturday and Sunday, when all the team finals are scheduled to be held.

Organised by the Women and Sports Committee of the DSC under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Hind Bint Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, Wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this year’s tournament has an increased prize fund of Dh600,000 in nine sports disciplines.
