Dubai: Nuriya Ismagilova from Gas and Petroleum Chemicals and Suad Abdullah from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) clinched top honours in the 3km road run held as part of the 5th Shaikha Hind Women’s Sports Tournament, on Friday.

Ismagilova finished the 3km course in a fast time of 12.07 minutes, leaving Lara Ammoury from du in second with a time of 14.46 minutes and Nada Salha from Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in third with a time of 14.52 minutes.

Suad Abdullah from Dewa was too strong in the UAE nationals category that attracted a total of 39 athletes as the Dewa employee finished with a time of 16.30 minutes leaving Ayesha Ahmad Fulaz (16.32 minutes) from Dubai Ambulance in second and Reem Abdullah Al Baloushi (17.58 minutes) from Dubai Prosecution, in third.

“We are encouraged with the response form Emirati women in this year’s road run. Much of the credit for this needs to go to the families of these women who have always backed them to be part of something as unique as the women’s sports tournament held under the patronage of Shaikha Hind,” Fawzia Faraidooni from the Women’s Sports Committee of Dubai Sports Council (DSC) told Gulf News.

“This year we have done better as far as numbers are concerned in all ten sports disciplines and this shows that women are very much interested in making sports and fitness a vital part of their lifestyles,” she added.

Meanwhile, the volleyball, badminton and chess competitions were scheduled to get under way from Saturday evening at various venues in Dubai. The finals of these team competitions will be worked off from November 23-25.
