Dubai: The Dubai Sports Council (DSC) has urged the public and private sectors to join hands and ensure the success of International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6.

Several organisations have lined up events to mark the day and the DSC has called upon the public and private corporate sectors to join hands.

“We showed the right earnestness while hosting the Peace and Sport Conference in 2012. This event appealed to a wide international audience while cementing Dubai’s position as a sports hub in the true sense,” Saeed Hareb, General Secretary, DSC told Gulf News.

“We have called upon various government departments and private companies in Dubai to organise events for both men and women to show our support to the United Nations’ initiative of International Day of Sport for Development and Peace,” Hareb added.

April 6 is the UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace that recognises the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide. The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace promotes healthy lifestyles and emphasises the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) focus on giving as many people as possible access to sport. It is day when some of the world’s leading sportspeople work together with communities to bring sporting opportunities to enrich lives, particularly children.

A few years back, Dubai was recognised by Agita Mundo — the global physical activity promotion network — for raising the level of health awareness among residents in the emirate. The Brazil-based Agita Mundo that was founded in 2002 with the aim of promoting physical activity as a healthy behaviour for people of all ages, nations and characteristics.

The DSC is allowing two or more entities to collaborate and organise events to mark the occasion on Thursday. On their part, the DSC has agreed to provide technical support for these events while also assisting organisations in obtaining necessary approvals and permissions to conduct events in public places.

In October 2016, the DSC launched the ‘Hamdan Bin Mohammad Community Sports Initiative’ in collaboration with top government departments in Dubai. More recently, the DSC has arranged the inaugural Labour Sports Tournament that is scheduled to conclude in November.
