Abu Dhabi: Over 800 police personnel from over 51 countries will be descending on the capital to take part in the 2nd USIP World Police Games from November 3-10.

Lt. General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Interior, was present to witness the torch ceremony at the Ministry of Interior here in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. Ahmad Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, President of the International Police Union, Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Shafar, Under Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Assistant Under Secretary for Naturalisation, Residency Affairs at the ministry, Major General Salim Mubarak Al Shamsi, Under Secretary of the Interior Ministry for Resources and Supportive Services, Major General Ahmad Nasser Al Raisi, Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Dubai, and Brigadier General Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi were also present for the ceremony.

Al Shafar stressed on the ministry’s keenness to organise a world championship according to international standards, in which athletes from all over the world can compete, develop relations, share experiences and improve abilities.

“The Ministry of the Interior, in accordance with the directives of the federal government, is keen to ensure the success of this international sports police event in a manner that contributes to the promotion of the UAE, which has time and again proved to the world its organising capabilities in various fields,” said Al Shafar, adding, “The athletes will compete in four disciplines — tactical shooting, swimming, judo and Jiu-Jitsu.”

Al Shafar went on to reveal that the Supreme Organising Committee of the championship is making continuous efforts to make sure that the police championship is of high level and it would enhance the reputation of the UAE and strengthen its position among the developed world.

He pointed out that after the UAE was nominated to host the tournament, the ministry worked through its committees specialised in providing all facilities necessary along with modern technology, finest stadia with international specifications and a website for the championship to ease the registration process.

Brigadier Waleed Salem Al Shamsi, Chairman of the Organising Committee also expressed his confidence in making this event a grand success.
