Dubai: In line with this being the Year of Zayed, Saturday’s Arabian Gulf Super Cup between Al Jazira and Al Wahda at Bani Yas Stadium from 8pm has been renamed the Year of Zayed Arabian Gulf Super Cup.

“The Super Cup is the best occasion for football to celebrate the life and achievements of our wise leader and founding father as we live in a prosperous, developed nation under the umbrella of our wise leadership,” said Major General Mohammad Khalfan Al Rumaithi, President of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare.

Pro League Committee chairman Abdullah Nasser Al Junaibi, added: “Celebrating the Year of Zayed through the Super Cup means a lot to us at the PLC, because the association of the founding father’s name to the event will make it an important national event and places extra responsibilities on our shoulders to organise an event that lives up to the great name and deliver a match that befits the name of the Year of Zayed.”

A special opening ceremony starting an hour before kick-off will feature top performers. There will also be accompanying events earlier in the day and at half time. Following the match Al Rumaithi will represent medals and the trophy before the crowning ceremony.
