Dubai: Sharjah coach Jose Peseiro hopes his team will start peaking at least by next season.

Immensely pleased after picking up an away point with a 2-2 draw against defending champions Al Ahli late on Saturday, the Portuguese-born Peseiro admitted that his team has always been among the challengers to the so-called big teams in the AGL.

With two more matches of the AGL in hand, Sharjah are sitting well above the drop zone in ninth position with 25 points following six wins, seven draws and eleven losses so far.

“I doubt the standing and the points is a true reflection of my team,” Peseiro told Gulf News.

“We have been brilliant, but in spurts, and that has made the difference. We need consistency and I am convinced we will have this one quality going into the next season,” he added.

On Saturday, the visitors from the neighbouring emirate went clear twice. And on both, the defending champions — who surrendered their AGL crown to Al Jazira on Saturday — had to fight back and salvage a draw. “I have always believed that this team is meant for bigger things. Today was an example of this. I am sure we will be among those fighting for a position in the near future,” Peseiro noted.

However, for the time being the Portuguese coach, who served as assistant in Real Madrid few years back, will have to pay attention to Sharjah’s next fixture against former champions Al Ain. “I am wondering how this match will go as we will be without a few key players like Digao, Shaheen Abdul Rahman and Walid Ahmad. But I believe this will be a good opportunity for some of our young and promising players to show what they can do for their club. I want these young players to take this chance,” he added.
