Dubai: Miroslav Djukic is keen on signing off the season on a winning note as he leads Al Shabab in their final match of the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) campaign against Al Wahda on Saturday, in what could also be his last game in charge.

Brought in as a mid-season replacement for Dutch coach Fred Rutten in the last week of January, Djukic has a contract till the end of this season.

With no surety on his future, the Serbian is playing a wait-and-see game.

“This is our last game and I have a good feeling about it. We have been progressing well with the team and we have to continue the way we have done so far since the past few matches,” Djukic said.

“We will be up against an aggressive and compact team that has scored many goals, but has also let in goals. So the key to the match will be a compact defence,” he warned.

Word has it that the Al Shabab management has already shown favour in procuring the services of fellow Serbian Goran Tufegdzic, the former Kuwait manager, for next season.

“I am not aware of anything. My focus is that we need to finish this game well. We will know our fate only after we sit with the management after the game against Al Wahda. All I know is that I have a contract till the end of the season and I am focused on signing off on a winning note,” Djukic said.

Asked to hand himself a report card, the Serbian said: “I think my time here has been a very positive experience for me. I am a much better coach now than before I came here. Four months ago when I landed here I didn’t know anything about the club, about the culture or the fans. But now there is a mutual belief between me and the players and this can only benefit the club in the long term,” the coach noted.

“It is very nice to see the team growing each week. In all fairness, we have had just eight or nine games together and this not enough time to see a big change in the team. Our team now is really competitive and this is a good sign for the future as we will have the edge when we begin the new season,” he added.
