Fabio Cannavaro — 2006 World Cup-winning captain and World Player of the Year, formerly with Real Madrid and Juventus, ended his career at the age of 37 with Dubai’s Al Ahli in 2010/11. He stayed on until 2014 in an advisory/ambassadorial role and became assistant manager in 2013/14 before leaving to coach in China.

Walter Zenga — The 1990 World Cup keeper, who was a stalwart for Inter Milan, coached Al Ain briefly in 2007, but did better on his return with Al Nasr from 2011-2013 leading them up the table into Asian Champions League qualifying spots. He also had brief stints at Al Jazira (2013/14) and Al Shaab (2015/16).

Luca Toni — During Walter Zenga’s reign at Al Nasr, this 2006 World Cup winning striker joined from Juventus and spent a brief six months at the club in 2012 at the age of 35, scoring just three goals in eight games, before returning to Fiorentina and moving on to Verona where he became Serie A’s leading scorer.

Cesare Prandelli — Became Al Nasr coach this summer, but had earlier transformed Fiorentina from relegation-fodder into Champions League qualifiers winning Serie A Coach of the Year in 2007/08 and then led Italy to second at Euro 2012 before crashing out in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.
