Dubai: Diego Maradona has said he’s not afraid of the challenge after taking charge of UAE second division side Fujairah.

The legendary Argentine 1986 World Cup winning No. 10 signed a one-year deal with the Wolves on Sunday, ending a five-year hiatus from coaching where he last managed Dubai side Al Wasl for a season back in 2011.

Fujairah were relegated from the UAE top flight last season and failed to bounce back this year after finishing fourth. Maradona will now be tasked with getting them back up where they belong.

“I am not afraid of the challenge, it’s the opposite in fact, the very opposite, I’m really excited,” he told Fifa.com.

“I cannot wait to see the players and see how they train, how they eat and how they hit the ball.

“It’s a new challenge in a smaller league but I’ll treat it like it was the best league in the world.

“I liked the project and especially the team, who were one point away from being promoted (they were actually nine points short). That means the spine of the team is a solid one now it’ll be time to work with them and recharge the batteries.”
