Cairo: Al Wahda are out of the Arab Club Championships following a second 2-0 group stage defeat, this time against Egypt’s Al Ahly on Tuesday.

Amr Barakat opened the scoring on 32 minutes and Islam Mohareb added a second six minutes from time.

In between Al Wahda’s Khalil Ebrahim was sent off for a second bookable offence on the hour.

The Clarets had earlier lost 2-0 to Algeria’s NA Hussein Dey on Saturday. It may be recalled that Al Wahda’s Sebastian Tagliabue had been sent off in that match for appearing to stamp on an opponent.

The Abu Dhabi club now sit bottom of Group A on zero points and a minus-four goal difference heading into their final group game against Jordan’s Al Faisaly in Cairo on Friday.

Al Faisaly top the group on six points and a plus-two goal difference, while NA Hussein Dey and Al Ahly are level in second on three points and a plus-one goal difference.

The top teams from three groups of four make it through to the semi-finals plus one best runner-up.

The Arab Club Championships have been running almost annually since 1980. A UAE club has never won or reached the final.

This is Romanian former Steaua Bucharest coach Laurentiu Reghecampf’s first set of matches in charge of Al Wahda since replacing Mexican coach Javier Aguirre. Aguirre bowed out in style after winning the President’s Cup in May and chose not to renew his contract.
