Dubai: Al Ain striker Ryan Babel has apologised for sexist comments aimed at a female follower on social networking site Twitter.

On Saturday the Dutch 28-year-old former Ajax and Liverpool forward posted a link to a story about his former Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez being accused of playing defensive tactics with his current club Real Madrid.

The post was a attached to a status update which simply said "Hmm".

@Shannxo said: “@Ryanbabel why you hate him so much, he’s manager of Real Madrid while you beg your Twitter followers to add you on Whatsapp.”

To which Babel replied: “@Shannxo I think u should concentrate on growing some [expletives] instead of speaking about football… Ur a girl… Stay in ur lane [sic].

“At least let your brother or your boyfriend make the comment then we can argue… Not gonna argue with a lil girl, with all respect… C’mon now,” he added.

On Sunday Babel sent a series of tweets with what appeared to be an attempt at an apology for his “wrong choice of words”.

“Yesterday I’ve made my apology and gave an explanation on snapchat on the point that I tried to make the other night when I picked the wrong choice of words,” he said.

“However for the ones that don’t have snapchat or have not seen my story I will give a short explanation again.

“I wanna make clear that my goal of reacting on this particular twitter user was just [to] say that “i” personally don’t argue with girls/woman [sic] about football.

“To not get confused woman can be die hard football fans. Woman nowadays even playing football that’s very cool and I’m very impressed. Yes I have also followed the woman world cup, I was impressed, but you have to understand that football as a profession is a job!!!

“As a football fan u have not the real idea what is like to be on the pitch with your colleges [sic] and the coaching staff. What is being discussed on HOW the manager want you to play.

“So basically IF I am going to have a conversation about football with a woman TRUST me its not the same conversation. The understanding gab [sic] is to big to understand whats going on.

“Its not a question nowadays about wether [sic] you know whats offside or not as a woman… I know you know that now.

“So once again. I apologise to ALL girls and woman who think I meant different. I personally just don’t like to argue about football with a woman, that’s all.

“And for the ones who are disappointed with me I totally understand. I can’t change it anymore BUT I will say this. If a similar thing happens next time I WILL respond again IF I feel like responding. BUT the only difference will be I will be more careful with the words I choose.”
