Abu Dhabi: Team Abu Dhabi’s Rashid Al Qamzi and Mohammad Al Mehairbi finished sixth and 14th respectively on their UIM F2 Championship debut at the rain-interrupted UIM F2 Italian Grand Prix at Campione d’Italia on Sunday.

With most of the racing schedule put back to Sunday because of heavy rain, the Abu Dhabi duo were left with a flat-out timetable of racing at the Italian enclave on Lake Lugano.

They went on to reach the chequered flag in sixth and 14th positions, behind first-placed Pierre Lundin of Sweden, England’s Matt Palfreyman in second and Sweden’s Erik Edin in third.

Al Qamzi had started the race in sixth and maintained his position throughout, while Al Mehairbi had climbed from 20th to 15th, before falling back to 18th. “The weather interruption was unfortunate, but it was the same for everyone and it meant a lot of the racing was crammed into one day,” said Salem Al Rumaithi, assistant general manager of the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC). “It was a new experience for Rashid and Mohammad. They both delivered excellent performances against a very strong field of European racers and this bodes extremely well for the future.”
