Dubai: Nearly 200 fencers from all over the UAE will take part in the MK Fencing Academy’s (MKFA) Epee Cup at their Emirates Hills base on Friday and Saturday.

Billed as one of the biggest local fencing competitions, the tournament is being held in four categories — men’s and women’s opens and categories for boys and girls under 15 years.

While the open competitions for men and women will have Dh7,500 each in cash prizes, the juniors categories will have vouchers worth Dh15,000 on offer.

The event, which is sponsored by Gargash Enterprises Mercedes-Benz, will attract competitors from clubs across the country.

“We have managed to sustain the interest of the fencing community in the UAE and perhaps by next year we should be able to take the next logical step and have a satellite event on the international FIE calendar,” Mihail Kouzev, Founder of the MKFA, told Gulf News.

“We had a bit of interest from participants from France and Finland, but we could not accommodate them as we already have so many local contestants.

“Hopefully with our ambitions for this event to be on the international calendar we can hope to see much better participation from other countries.”

Supported by Dubai Sports Council, Free Play, Wild Wadi and Super Sports Academy, the annual fencing competition will get under way with the open men’s and women’s competitions on Friday morning.
