Fujairah: The UAE national team tennis coach is determined to assist his Davis Cup squad members in a better way even after the end of next month's Davis Cup tie in Sri Lanka.

"We need to do better than what we are doing for our players so that they get the desired amount of tennis throughout the year and not just closer to tournaments," Jorge Munoz told Gulf News on the sidelines of the Shaikh Zayed Cup that concluded in Fujairah last weekend.

Two of the UAE's regular Davis Cup squad members have been displaced in recent times. Hamad Abbas Al Janahi is studying business management in the US while Mahmoud Nader Al Beloushi has taken up a fresh posting with the Abu Dhabi Municipality.

University involvement

"We need to see how Hamad can get to play more tennis, and we plan to do this by getting his university involved in his training programmes," Munoz said.

"Once he goes back to university in September we would like him to be playing on a regular basis so that he does not lose his touch," he added. For the time-being, the coach has overcome a similar predicament with Al Beloushi. "I was hesitant at the start, but once I had decided what I do I got into the car, took Omar [Behroozian] along with me and drove down to Abu Dhabi for practice sessions. Now we do this at least once a week," he said.
