Dubai: The top two seeds secured contrasting wins to book their places in the final round of qualifying at the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open being played at the Dubai Tennis Stadium on Sunday.

Top seed Varvara Lepchenko powered her way to a 6-0, 7-6 (1) win over Sesil Karatantcheva, while second seed Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany fought hard for a 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (6) win over China’s Qiang Wang.

The top seed from the US will now play Saisai Zheng – the only Chinese player left in the qualifying draw – to book her place as one of four qualifiers in the main draw. Earlier in the day, Zheng had also battled over three sets to get past Andrea Hlavackova 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Friedsam, on the other hand, had to dig in deep before her win against one of three Chinese youngsters in the qualifying. The German girl will now meet Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, a 6-2, 6-1 winner against eighth seed Kateryna Bondarenko from the Ukraine.

The lower end of the qualifying draw has just one seed standing. Fourth seed Denisa Allertova eased her way past Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-3 to set a final round meeting with Yaroslava Shvedova – who has sent fifth seed Zarina Diyas packing on the opening day.
