No politics in sport

Dubai: Politics has nothing to do with sport and this was cleanly driven home by American tennis star Andy Roddick, in Dubai this week for the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.

"I've felt very welcome here and I really do not see why I should be [worried] about it [politics]," he said in answer to a question on a growing sense of hostility towards American citizens in this region due to the invasion and the subsequent handling of the situation in Iraq.

"I am not the one making those decision, so why should I be affected?" Roddick questioned. "I am not the one involved in those sort of things [politics]."

He reiterated that one of the several reasons he made the trip to Dubai was to experience the culture in this part of the world.

"I have heard amazing things about Dubai and I wanted to come and see for myself. I like to experience different cultures."
