Let me be gallant just this once and follow the "Ladies First" diktat.

After all, most of the action is happening on that side as we get into the fifth day of US Open.

The thing with women's tennis today is that it is anybody's game. A player who has a good week and a half is capable of beating everyone else and then is equally capable of getting beaten by everyone else.

Everybody says this is a sign of depth but it could also be a sign of inconsistency, I don't know. No player has dominated the women's game over the past two years.

As a result, Serena Williams, who is recovering from injury, is considered a favourite while Caroline Wozniaki, who is the top-seeded player, does not have a single Grand Slam to her name.

A few years ago the Williams' sisters and then the Belgian girls dominated women's tennis.

However, right now it is really anybody's game. French champion Li Na and Wimbledon champion Kvitova have not survived the first week and the worst of it was that Venus Williams had to withdraw with a serious ailment that could threaten her future. My thoughts are with the champion player and I hope things are not as grim as reports would suggest.

The only good news for me, as a German, is that Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic have made it to the next round.

However, as fans, experts and old-timers would tell you, I still think it's good to have two to three champion players to support.

Women's tennis is lacking that simply because nobody is consistent enough.

On the men's side, proceedings are going according to form with the usual suspects making it so far.

I thought the opening match was a little tense for Rafael Nadal and he was lucky at two points in that game. However, it was nothing that really challenged the defending champion and he was professional enough to keep any threat at bay.

Top seed Novak Djokovic looked good, as did Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Indian fans would have been interested in the latter's match since it was against Somdev Dev Barman. The Indian started well, but the power and experience of Murray was too much for him.

Opposite situations

So we have two diametrically opposite situations in the men's and women's draw. I expect most of the top eight seeds to be in the quarters next week this time.

As for the women, expect the unexpected! That said, I always believe in class and experience. So come next Saturday, we might still see Serena Williams on Centre Court.
