Dubai: This year India has advanced to the Davis Cup World Group play-offs with wins over Chinese Taipei and South Korea, and coach Zeeshan Ali feels that it is true team spirit that has got the squad so far.

“This is not simply just another team. The main thing is how each and every member of the team gets along with each other and backs each other with true spirit,” Zeeshan Ali told Gulf News during a brief visit to Dubai.

“There is no back-biting, no talking. Each one genuinely wants the other players to perform and give their best for the country. I’ve been with the Davis Cup squads in the past and I am yet to see this sort of unity and strength,” he added.

With veterans Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi easing out of the team, India has gone through a transition with the inclusion of two former experienced hands, namely Anand Amritraj as captain and Zeeshan Ali as coach.

“It makes a huge difference having two former players in the set-up. The players know that they can rely on us as we bring in the experience and when we say something it is because we have walked this road before,” Zeeshan Ali said.

“This team has the potential. The current crop has shown a lot of promise and they definitely have the potential to break through into the top-100,” he added.
