Dubai Hurricanes are basking in the glory of winning their maiden Arabian Gulf Rugby and Football Union (AGRFU) ladies rugby 7s league title.

The Hurricanes stormed past Doha Oryx 17-10 in the final at Dubai Exiles and coach Jon Kendry was thrilled with his side's achievement.

“It's been a great season for the club as a whole but for the ladies side in particular, it has been a season where a lot of potential has been fulfilled,'' said Kendry.

“We played 24 matches and won 20 of them which is very good and also in the final, it was nice to show that we were actually the top side.''

Kendry added: “A few members who are on the AGRFU squad have done well and some of the others have developed into quite competent rugby players.

“We have Natasha Robinson at 17 who was selected to play for the Gulf squad and did very well in the recent tournament in Tunisia and Adrienne Kettlewell at 18 has also made the squad.''

Team captain Kate Chadwick was also upbeat after the win. “Dubai Hurricanes started as a school before becoming a club so to have won our first title is very special,'' said Chadwick.

The skipper saluted the efforts of her teammates. “We have been training hard the whole season and it is down to lot of commitment from the girls.''

Maiden victories always call for fancy celebrations and Dubai Hurricanes had prepared well according to the skipper. “About two months ago, we had practised a dance sequence with all the girls dressed as superwomen and Jon Kendry as Superman,'' revealed Chadwick.

But the joy of victory did not stop Kendry from heaping praise on the league's other teams. “The standard of ladies rugby in general has risen this season and I have to say that the camaraderie among all the clubs has been excellent,'' he said.
