The Marauders hope to make all their experience in the union code count when they take on rugby league representatives St Helen's in today's semifinals of the International Invitational trophy.

The English guest side booked their place in the last-four stage of the competition with a hard-earned 12pts-5 defeat of Le Froggies.

And manager Hugh Griffiths is now quietly confident as he contemplates a clash with Saints.

He said: "We know that we have the sevens ability and sevens experience to beat them.

"But they will be very fit, very physical and in our faces. It's whether we can match that physicality."

The Marauders born in an English pub as a social side 25 years ago have been able to call on some of rugby's biggest names over the years, including Will Carling, Lawrence Dallaglio and Jeremy Guscott.

And they know exactly what they're up against having defeated rugby league side London Broncoes in last year's semifinals.

Although they lost the final, they have won three titles in the past 12 years and Griffiths believes this current competition is the best he has seen.

Toughest event

"It's definitely the toughest event we've experienced here. The standard just gets better and better," he said.

St Helen's, meanwhile, cruised into the last-four stage of the tournament with a 31-5 defeat of Buffaloes.

Coach Apollo Perelini said: "We're starting to learn a bit more about the rules. There were definite improvements from yesterday. Now, we'll just see how it goes."

We don't have anything planned - we'll turn up and take it from there."

The Kentz Drifters, sparked by the genius of Fijian maestro Waisale Serevi, coasted into the semifinals with a 54-nil defeat of Crawshays and will now meet Christina Noble who had to work hard for a 19-12 victory over Quality Street Gang.

Meanwhile, Emirates remain the team to beat in the Local Social tournament after cruising to the final with wins over the British High Command and Barasti.

In today's International Invitation Plate semifinals, New Zealand Legends will face Primax Dingoes and the Bone Steelers clash with Podmoskova.

Varsity Blues, meanwhile, booked their place in the International Overseas Trophy semifinals with a 43-nil defeat of Baku and will now face Pyrenees who thumped naval medical 40-0.

The other semifinal is between Redingsians and Bagdadies.

In the International Overseas Plate semifinals, Newton Abbot will meet fellow English West Country side Old Bristolians, and Racing Club take on Pie & Pint.
