Dubai: Hurricanes will be holding ladies rugby tryouts for all ages and ability at The Sevens Stadium from 3pm on Friday in a bid to bolster their numbers in pre-season.
For those interested in taking up the game, regular training sessions will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm and annual membership is just Dh1,000.
A flyer released by the club read: "There's a position for you in our team irrespective of size, shape, age, background, experience or fitness level. Whether you are 18 or 38 there is really no excuse not to give it a go."
The afternoon of non-contact play, demos and try-outs will be followed by refreshments in the clubhouse from 3pm. Participants can then support the Hurricane's men's rugby side in their annual memorial match dedicated to the memory of Jamie Black and Mark Filby from 7pm.
Martin Hollis, Ladies team manager and club tour co-ordinator at Dubai Hurricanes, told Gulf News: "Rugby is big at school level among the U-15s and U-18s girls team's but we want to attract new players at adult ladies' level, too. The idea is to attract those who have never picked up a ball, mothers coming back into the game or those who have relocated and have yet to find a club here in the UAE."
Hollis added: "We're going to make a day of it with minis, youth rugby and our men's memorial game either side of the ladies try-outs. This is the first time we've done such an open day for our ladies but we are looking to make it an annual occasion. We want to attract as many ladies as possible — the Dubai Hurricane ethos is ‘more the merrier'. Our first tournament is on October 7 and we'd welcome the newcomers into these squad try-outs."
