Dubai: Sevens all-time highest point scorer Ben Gollings doubts fellow Englishman Dan Norton can surpass his record of 2652 points.

Norton, 26, is the nearest Englishman to 34-year-old Golling’s record, with 889 points, 16 positions behind. But despite being one of few players in that list still active and with years to catch up, Gollings doubts Norton’s ability.

“I think the biggest thing for Dan is the mental side of the game,” said Gollings. “When he’s on his game he’s phenomenal. He’s got pace to burn and he’s a great athletic mover and can score tries.

“The key to him is the mental side of the game and being able to stay switched-on the whole time, and that’s one of the biggest challenges in sevens, the consistency in performance.

“We often see Dan is a world beater one minute and looks below average the next. He’s got all the attributes, but if he can just sustain that quality of play the world is his oyster and everything is to gain for him.”

Norton may have more luck surpassing Argentina legend Santiago Gomez Cora’s record of 230 tries. The Englishman is just 45 tries behind Cora, and sits fifth in the all-time highest try scorer’s charts.
