Dubai: Ireland legend Brian O’Driscoll feels the new Six Nations points system will rid the format of excitement.

Wins are now worth four points rather than two and five should winning teams score four or more tries. Losing teams will get a bonus point if they have scored four or more tries and another if they lose by less than seven points. A draw is now worth two points rather than one, again with extra points for having scored four or more tries. Any team winning all five matches will receive three extra points.

The changes have been made to encourage a more attacking style of play but former centre O’Driscoll isn’t keen.

“There’s less scope of getting what we had recently where on the last day of the tournament it was insane because all games counted and anyone could have won. That was probably a one-off but I think your reducing the likelihood of that and it’s going to be cleaner but I don’t know if that’s necessarily a good thing. We’re losing a bit of the nostalgia that lives with the tournament and it didn’t feel broken so I don’t know why they’ve decided to fix it,” he insisted.
