Dubai : Any sporting event that attracts around 50,000 spectators has huge importance for the image of the hosts and the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is no different.

When the 40th edition of the region's most popular sporting event takes place at the Sevens Stadium from December 3-5, its effects can last for more than the three days of action.

Even more will be at stake this year and the organisers are hoping that it will be a unique and exhilarating experience for the thousands of Sevens fans.

So is Dubai ready to turn on the style as Rob Hodson. Operations Manager at the Sevens, is confident it will?

Following are excerpts from an interview with the man entrusted with putting it all together before the players take over.

Gulf News: What is your role at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens?

Rob Hodson: As Operations Manager, I design, install and manage all the infrastructural and operational elements of the event.

What exactly does that involve?

Based on the number of Rugby Sevens teams playing and the number of expected spectators, the design process begins. Once drawings and layouts are approved and contractors appointed, we move on to mobilisation and installation. Final stage is the actual running of the event.

What's the most challenging part of your job?

Trying to put myself in the shoes of all those attending, from the rugby players through to the baby in the pushchair, I need to work towards safety and convenience for everyone.

What do you think makes the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens such a hugely popular event?

You don't need to be a rugby veteran or specialist to enjoy one of the most exciting sports on the planet. For three days, everyone can cheer for their home country, family member or friend as players range from seasoned international players to amateur GCC players. Combine this with the off field entertainment and you have a formula which creates a unique gathering of people. My father-in-law, Cliff, who flies over every year for the event, tells me that the freedom to walk around the six pitches, watching all different levels of Sevens rugby and meeting new people in the process is what he enjoys the most here.
