Dubai: Matt Brown, a veteran sports journalist from New Zealand, will be covering his seventh Dubai Rugby Sevens this year. The following are his quick takes on the event and the city of Dubai.

Who do you work for and what do you do?

MATT BROWN: I am the sports editor at New Zealand's largest radio network and present the breakfast sports news on Newstalk ZB. We also run a 24/7 sports radio station called radio sport.

Where are you based?

I'm based in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city.

How many times have you covered the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens?

This will be my seventh Emirates Airline Rugby Sevens and I also covered the World Cup Sevens in Dubai earlier this year.

How does the Dubai tournament compare to others around the world?

Dubai is one of the big three along with Hong Kong and Wellington. Terrific fan support generates an amazing atmosphere. Being the first tournament of the year is also a great plus for Dubai, because each year the tournament throws up new talent and you are never quite sure who will win.

Last year was the first time the event was held at Emirates' purpose-built venue, The Sevens. What were your thoughts on the new venue?

It's a great venue... spacious with better facilities than the temporary stadium.

What do you think makes the Dubai tournament so popular?

The carnival atmosphere is key. Also it's a great city to have a good time in socially. I should know, having tried most of the famed nightspots. And the weather! Great climate (except for the 2006 tournament!)

Who do you think are favourites to take this year's title?

Probably South Africa, the reigning IRB Sevens World Series champions, although never write off the New Zealand side. Gordon Tietjens will have some fresh new talent on show.
