Qatar boys shine in world meet

A team from Qatar has emerged as the winners of the fourth division tournament in the Evergrande 49th world table tennis championships taking place in Guangzhou, China.

Doha: A team from Qatar has emerged as the winners of the fourth division tournament in the Evergrande 49th world table tennis championships taking place in Guangzhou, China.

The result sees the team promoted to the third division and means that Qatar will move up several places in the world rankings.

Three of the successful teammates - Ahmad Al-Mohannadi, Ahmad Al-Muthana, Mohammad Al-Sa'adi - are students from ASPIRE Academy in Doha, while the fourth, Walid Nasser, represents the Qatar Table Tennis Association and trains with the ASPIRE players.

After easy wins in the group matches against Maldives (3-0), Jamaica (3-1), Malta (3:0), Sierra Leone (3-0) and Montenegro (3-0), the team finished in the first place in their group.

In the knock-out matches of the best 16 teams of division four, Qatar won against Montenegro, this time by 3-1 margin.
