Dubai: A young Formula 3 driver suffered an horrific accident at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on Saturday.

Peter Li Zhi Cong, 22 from Guang Zhou, China, made heavy contact with the stationary car of 21-year old American driver Ryan Teveter at the sixth corner in the opening round of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship – Europe’s premier junior racing series.

Reports from the circuit’s medical centre have confirmed that Li Zhi Cong is 'awake and alert.’ Teveter, meanwhile, is being treated for minor injuries while Pedros Piquet, who was also involved, walked away unharmed.

Later reports suggest that Li Zhi Cong has sustained injuries to his heel and vertebrae.

Teveter spun out across the gravel, with the car then rolling back on to the circuit. The off created a thick dust cloud which caused Teveter’s stricken car to become momentarily invisible.

An unsighted Li Zhi Cong approached the dust cloud at full speed, crashing nose first into the back of Teveter. Li Zhi Cong was sent into a terrifying roll, launching several metres into air and cork-screwing before landing violently.

Piquet was also unable to avoid the stricken Teveter, T-boning him and also crashing off.

The race was immediately stopped.

Callum Ilott claimed a provisional victory after the race was halted.
