I enjoyed the Austrian Grand Prix. It wasn’t a classic in the same way as Japan 1976 or Brazil 2008; it wasn’t a classic at all. It was just another Grand Prix.

I enjoyed the start, I enjoyed the crash, I enjoyed Vettel’s disobedient wheel-gun, I enjoyed Max Verstappen, Romain Grosjean, and Felipe Nasr, and I enjoyed the fight for third at the end. But most of all I enjoyed the 30 lap lull where not much happened.

Why?

Because I love Formula 1, and I will watch every race regardless.

Last week I wrote, at some great length, about contemporary Formula 1’s overly complex rules being a turn-off for new fans. Nothing and no one can change my opinion on that. But I’m not a new fan, I’m a fan of 25 years, so I don’t care if a race is boring, I will still enjoy it.

If Johnny New-Fan wants to moan about not being able to understand F1 that’s his problem. I had to learn the rules, so why can’t he?

Formula 1 gets dragged over the coals a lot – often justifiably – but not this week. Rosberg beat Hamilton in a fair fight and closed the gap in the title race to 10 points.

It may not have been a classic wheel-to-wheel all-out duel, but Rosberg seemed pretty happy afterwards.

Good, I am too – and I wanted Hamilton to win.

Bring on Silverstone.
