Abu Dhabi: Malaysia Qi.Meritus Mahara team's Brazilian driver Diego Nunes feels he can step out of the shadow and win at the double header in next week's GP2 Asia at the Yas Marina Circuit (YMC)

"We know we have a fine team, so the main aim will be to ensure that both drivers end up at the top of the grid. After that, it will be all down to being competitive amongst ourselves," Nunes told Gulf News on Sunday.

Last weekend's GP2 testing threw open a few possibilities for an engrossing race to follow later this week in the competition that is seen as the prime feeder series for F1 drivers.

Besides Nunes and teammate Luca Filippi, there was Scuderia Coloni's Roldan Rodriguez who clocked second best (1:51.435) and iSport International's Davide Valsecchi who showed good form on both days on the 5.555km track.

Superior effort

But it has been the superior team effort from the Malaysian team that has given their two drivers the edge while also keeping the other set-ups wondering.

Competition between the top crust of the drivers has been intense, but Nunes hopes he can step away from the more experienced lot and make a name for himself.

"There are eight or nine very experienced drivers and both of us are among them. All will be hoping to be ahead of the rest, but I think we would both be looking at a podium finish in both races," Nunes said.

The lad from Sao Paulo began in 1998 with go-karting in his native Brazil. The last two seasons have been spent with the GP2 Series and the ambitious Brazilian is now eyeing a successful outing so that he can attract the necessary attentions of other teams.

"I am willing to wait till the right team comes along," he said.
