Dubai: Brothers Rami and Ramez Azzam became the first siblings to share first and second spots on the podium at an official Sodi World Series (SWS) sprint race in round three of the four stage 2014 Ramadan Challenge at Dubai Kartdrome on Monday.

Starting from pole position Rami, who came first and seventh in rounds one and two, extended his championship lead after getting the better of his younger brother Ramez, who finished second in round two.

They crossed the finish line in tandem with Rami a mere 0.197 of a second ahead of his brother, who claimed the fastest lap in the process.

“This win was important for the championship standings because my main rivals were behind and caught up in the traffic and their own battles,” said Azzam. “Going into the final round on top of the standings is a boost and I look forward to next Monday.”

Over 13 seconds adrift of the Azzam duo there was a huge battle for third.

Imran Akhlaq escaped the brawl to claim his first r podium finish ahead of fourth-placed Sam Zian, Hussain Umid Ali, Mohammad Al Mutawaa, Ali Al Mansouri, Anas Al Halabi, Atef Al Barwani and Saeed Al Falasi rounding off the top ten. Less than three seconds separated the top six as they crossed the finish line.

The fourth and final round of the 2014 SWS Ramadan Challenge takes places on Monday, July 21 at Dubai Kartdrome, where the title will be decided.
