Former Ferrari Formula One driver Jean Alesi said time away from the buzz of motorsport is what fuelled his return to the race track.

“For me, after stopping my career in F1, I needed to experience the feel of racing again,'' said Alesi. “With this series, the cars are really easy and fun to drive and to start a new series like that with serious people is something that I like.''

Alesi was confident that the Speedcar Series would draw in the crowds. “Firstly there are names like Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson and myself joining this series, so it makes it attractive to the fans who have been following motorsport for a long time.

“And with these cars you can touch each other, they are show cars so I'm sure we will have success.''

A talented F1 driver in his days, Alesi was part of an unsuccessful era in Ferrari's history during which he claimed his sole Formula One victory at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix.

But Michael Schumacher arrived and turned darkness into light.

“The management has changed, but from my side nothing has changed as I'm still a Ferrari fan,'' said Alesi.
