Goodwood, England: Stuck for room for most part of the Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes, William Buick produced a perfectly timed run aboard Endless Time to reward Godolphin with their first winner of the week at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday.

Sent off as the big favourite, Charlie Appleby’s mare looked to be in all sorts of trouble with two furlongs to run as Dubka (Ryan Moore), Melodic Motion (Oisin Murphy) and Natural Scenery Jim Crowley were battling to the wire.

But once switched left to find some daylight, last year’s Group 2 Lancashire Oaks heroine sprouted wings to snatch a narrow but decisive neck victory over Dubka, who in turn prevailed by a neck from Melodic Motion, with Godolphin’s Natural Scenery three-quarters lengths back in fourth.

Buick, who must have been relieved to bury the demons following Ribchester’s agonising defeat in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, said: “She travels very well and Charlie just said ride a race and let it unfold, but it got a bit congested. “She got herself organised and went through the ground really well.

“On her day she’s pretty good, there’s very few in training that deserve to win a Group 1 more than her.”

Appleby, who believes that Endless Time deserves a crack at the premier division following this victory, said: “I’ve got to give credit to William, but she’s a great mare and 100 per cent genuine. I knew she’d get the trip and love the ground.

“She deserves a win like that as she’s knocked on the door in a few Group Ones and I’m delighted to have a winner here,” he added.

“I’d love to win a Group One with her and we might go back for the Prix Vermeille or the Prix Royal-Oak (France), but it’s not out of the question we could look at the Irish St Leger.”

Meanwhile, Godolphin’s Sobetsu ran a huge race in defeat to superstar Irish filly Minding, who stepped up in distance to claim a fourth Group 1 victory of the season in the Nassau Stakes, the day’s feature race.

Previously trained by David Wachman, the Galileo filly has now won four of her five starts including the English and Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Epsom.

Winter handled the step up in trip to win her fourth Group One of the season in the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.

Since joining Aidan O’Brien from David Wachman she has won four of her five starts.

However, winning jockey Ryan Moore put her latest performance into context and said: “You wouldn’t say she was impressive by any means, but this ground is really as bad as you are going to get.

“It wasn’t a smooth race at all, and it didn’t go the way you’d like it to have gone for her, but she’s got plenty of class and that’s what came out in the end.

“With six runners there was a lack of cover, but she listens and did everything right. She’s won four Group 1s on the spin and is a very professional racehorse. She knows how to race, and how to win.”

Buick was completing a day’s double having ridden Barraquero to win the Group 2 Richmond Stakes for trainer Brian Meehan.
