Dubai: The Royal Cavalry Oman’s Vulcain du Clos beat a strong field of Purebred Arabian milers to win the President of the UAE Cup at Wellington racecourse in Ostende, Belgium, on Monday evening.

The French-bred son of top Arabian Monsieur Al Maury, who is trained by Frenchman Charles Gourdain, came with a strong run to record an impressive victory in the 1,600-metre contest that carried a purse of €30,000 (Dh147,276).

A field of 13 Arabians, the largest number to take part in a race of this kind in Belgium, contested the event. Other notable runners included Athlete Del Sol, Gazel T, Poulain Kossack and Sartajano.

The President of the UAE Cup series is organised as part of efforts to raise the profile of Arabian horses on the international platform and to strengthen their cultural heritage and value, following the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the support of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Advisor to the UAE President.
