Dubai: Entries for the English St Leger (G1) close on Tuesday and it will be interesting to see how many horses stay their ground to make a bid for the final Classic of the British season.

Run over the longest Classic distance of 2,800 metres, the St Leger presents colts and fillies from the Classic generation with the last opportunity to leave their mark on the season and establish themselves as exciting prospects for the following year.

UAE-owned horses figure prominently in the ante-posts markets which are headed by Epsom Derby (G1) third Romsdal and also include Royal Ascot scorers Elite Army and Hartnell and Ivestec Oaks (G1) sensation Taghrooda.

Romsdal, who was a game third to Australia and Kingston Hill in the Derby, represents Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, wife of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, whose Godolphin stable is a six-time winner of the contest.

Godolphin are likely to run impressive King George V Stakes victory Elite Army and True Story, who has delivered some notable performance in top races like the Dante (G2), Derby and Eclipse Stakes (G1).

Stamina is always a key requirement in the £650,000 (Dh4 million) contest and the filly Taghrooda has shown she has both the staying power and a turn of foot to make an impact in races of this nature.

Should she start she can bid to make history by becoming Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance’s first winner of the race.

Trainer Andrew Balding is also looking to break the duck in the race after saddling Phoenix Reach to secure third place in 2003.

This year the Berkshire handler could be represented by Scotland, owned by dubai-based businesswoman the Fitri Hay.

The German-bred son of Monsun has run five times with his best performance being a third-place behind Eagle Top in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Balding said: “Scotland will certainly be given an entry in the St Leger next week. All has been well with him since his run at Royal Ascot.

“We are now looking at running him in a trial, all being well, his next outing is likely to be in the Group Three Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood [Wednesday, July 30].”
