Dubai: Watching a racehorse that you bought and now train for a friend win must feel really special.
And trainer Satish Seemar was living the experience at Jebel Ali Racecourse, when The New Maharjah, a horse that he sourced for his childhood friend Charnesh Kapoor, won the feature race on Friday afternoon.
Ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, the American-bred three-year-old made a huge impression when making all the running to comfortably land the 1,000-metre Shadwell Farm conditions race by three quarters of a length.
Waqqad, the mount of Jimmy Quinn, and Meqdaam, ridden by Liam Tarentaal, finished second and third respectively for owner/trainer Rashed Boursley.
“I couldn’t be happier to win such a nice race at such a nice venue,” said Kapoor. “All the credit goes to Satish, who bought the horse for me and [who] has trained it to win today.
“It’s a great feeling, especially as Satish and me grew up together in Delhi and here we are today, celebrating such a special moment.”
Seemar acknowledged that it felt extra special to buy and win a race with a horse that he had bought, in America. for Kapoor.
“It’s these moments that we are in the business for,” said Seemar. “We need to have more owners like Bobby in the sport. He’s purely in it for the fun, but perhaps that could change now that he has had the taste of winning.
“I liked the horse’s conformation when I saw him at the sales and did not hesitate bidding for him. He did not cost much, but looks like a really nice horse to have in the yard, for people like Bobby, and his family.”
Earlier, trainer Salem Bin Ghadayer continued from where he left off on Thursday at Meydan, to win the opening two races at Jebel Ali — the CBD handicap with Bois De Boulogne and the Al Shafar Investment handicap with Untold Story.
