Abu Dhabi: Sha’Red registered his maiden Group 1 victory by clinching the Dh500,000 Group 1 Liwa Oasis feature event at Abu Dhabi Racecourse on Sunday, comfortably beating new stablemate Areem.

Areem, led by local jockey Ahmad Ajtebi, had set the early pace but was overtaken in the final 200 metres by Sha’Red under Silvestre De Sousa, who went on to win by 3.75 lengths.

Girl Powerr, ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, settled for the third another 3.25 lengths adrift.

This the first race under new trainer Majid Al Jahouri for Sha’Red, who previously got the better of Areem in the Al Ruwais Group 3 race at the capital course last month.

“Sha’Red has done well to win his last two races and will now be rested and aimed for the National Day Cup next season,” revealed a delighted Al Jahouri. “It was his first Group 1 success and we expect him to progress further next season.”

Al Jahouri felt that Areem had lost some of his speed, but was still good enough to finish in the money.

“Areem loves the grass and, with age, wants to go further, maybe 2,000 metres — a distance we cannot find any races for him on the turf,” he said.

“He has done his lot for the season and we will see what’s for him next season.”

Al Jahouri had a double for the night as De Sousa also led Da’Areen to victory in the opening race — the Ghantoot Maiden Race.

In second, three-quarters of a length behind, was RB Burning Ash ridden by O’Shea, while George Buckell led Wazn to third place.

Trainer Salem Al Ketbi would have been on cloud nine as he completed a clean sweep in the Arabian Triple Crown series after O’Shea led Namrood to victory in round three.

Second was Newboy Du Paon ridden by Gerald Avranche, with Royston Ffrench on ES Kram third. The race was reduced to four horses after Shaheer, winner of the second leg last week, withdrew and O’Shea rode Namrood instead.

“It was a bit of a tactical race in such a small field but he is a very good horse. He ran second in round two and obviously he came out of this race well to have a nice confidence booster here on the night. He didn’t have a hard race so it is upwards for him in Abu Dhabi,” said an elated O’Shea.

Eric Lemartinel’s Ain Jaloot continued his sensational run of form by registering his fifth successive win, clinching the Wathba Stud Farm Cup and setting the new track record of 1:00.53.

The previous record of 1:00.88 had been held by AF Lafeh since March 2013.
