Dubai: Godolphin were denied a fourth victory in the English 1000 Guineas (G1) when Lucida was narrowly beaten by Irish filly Legatissimo in the second of Britain’s five Classics at Newmarket Racecourse in the UK on Sunday.

The Jim Bolger-trained daughter of Shamardal appeared to have every chance when pushed to lead by jockey Kevin Manning, but the winner came from last-to-first under Ryan Moore, grab the spoils and complete a Guineas double for the talented jockey.

Less than 24 hours after winning his first 2,000 Guineas with Gleneagles, Moore, who is widely regarded as one of the best jockeys in the world today, was picking up a second English Classic.

He also gifted Irish handler David Wachman, who saddled Again to land the Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) in 2009, with a maiden victory in the Newmarket showpiece.

Wachman’s filly was displaying her durability having only seven days earlier landed a Listed race at Gowran park in Ireland.

Tiggy Wiggy, ridden by champion jockey Richard Hughes, was a brave third, and with Mick Channon’s Malabar taking fourth place.

Fadhayyil, trained by Barry Hills for Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, finished fifth while Godolphin’s Local Time came home in 10th place.

“Things happened nicely, she switched off well and we got a nice tow into the race,” Moore told Channel 4 Racing.

“It’s the first time I’ve sat on her, but she’s obviously got plenty of ability, the second is a fair filly and she has run her down real well in the end.

“They went a proper gallop, she’s got plenty of speed but she really got up the hill well. I wouldn’t be sure about a mile and a half, but I think she’ll go further.”

Wachman did well to conceal his excitement at winning a first English Classic and said: “She’s a lovely filly, a big, scopey filly, and Ryan gave her a great ride.

“Over the winter she showed me she could be classy, but we went to Leopardstown early this season and she was beaten in soft ground and we were scratching our heads a bit.

“She won very well in Gowran last week, it was like a bit of work - we were taking a chance coming here so soon, but it worked.”

Asked where he would like to head with Legatissimo, Wachman quipped: “I’ll go where I’m told. She’ll definitely get further, so we’ll have plenty of options.”

British bookmaker Sky Bet cut Legatissimo to 4/1 (from 25/1) for the Investec Oaks and spokesman Michael Shinners told Sportinglife: “Legatissimo has propelled her way to the front of the market in our Investec Oaks betting.

“It was a very taking performance by the daughter of Danehill Dancer and it will take a good performance in the coming trials to knock her off top spot in the betting for the next fillies classic at Epsom in June.”

Lucida was hoping to give Godolphin a fourth success in the Guineas after Cape Verdi (1998), Kazzia (2002) and Blue Bunting (2011).
