Dubai: Former Jebel Ali Stables jockey Oisin Murphy bounced back from a suspension that kept him out of last weekend’s Guineas meeting to win the gruelling Chester Cup aboard the lesser fancied Montaly on Wednesday.

Trained by Andrew Balding, Murphy, the winner, came with a late burst to win from stablemate Yorkidding, with Fun Mac and Who Dares Wins filling up the lower placings in an exciting renewal of the race, which is run over 3,755 metres.

Murphy, suspended from April 28-May 7, after being found guilty of careless riding at Newcastle, was the second apprentice at Dhruba Selvaratnam’s Jebel Ali Stables during the 2013-2014 UAE racing season. He is currently retained rider to Qatar Racing.

“When you’re riding for Andrew Balding you learn to ride with your head and he puts no pressure on you,” he told UK Racing.

“It’s a very easy thing to do. You need the horses and as I’ve said before, fast horses make fast jockeys.”

Meanwhile, Godolphin handler Saeed Bin Surour saddles his first UK runner following an uneventful trip to America for the Kentucky Derby (G1), when he saddles impressive maiden winner Tamleek in the Group 3 Chester Vase, the highlight of day-two at the May Meeting.

The three-year-old, who will be ridden by Jim Crowley, races over an extended 12 furlongs for the first time in his career.

The Vase is a recognised trial for the Group 1 Derby at Epsom Downs on June 3, a race in which he holds an entry.

The Hard Spun colt, who was third on debut over a mile at Yarmouth in October, really caught the eye when posting a comfortable four-length win in a 10-furlong maiden at Newmarket on April 20.

Bin Surour said: “Tamleek won well at Newmarket and has been working nicely.

“This is another step forward and will tell us which direction to take in the future with him.”

Godolphin are also represented by the Charlie Appleby-trained Folkswood in the 10-furlong Huxley Stakes.

The son of Exceed and Excel, who has only finished out of the frame once in 10 starts, was beaten a neck in the nine-furlong Group 1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan on March 4 having previously won a handicap over the same course and distance on February 9.

His five rivals in the Huxley Stakes include US Group 1 scorer Deauville, Group 3 winner Royal Artillery and Poet’s World.

Appleby commented: “I was pleased with Folkswood’s run in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes, when he translated his good form in Dubai back to the UK.

“He came out of that race well and I expect the track and conditions at Chester to suit.”
