Scotland: Messages of support and prayers have been pouring in for North Yorkshire jockey Brian Toomey after he suffered ‘life-threatening’ injuries in a fall at a Scottish racecourse on Thursday.
Toomey, 24, was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee after the fall three flights from home at Perth.
An update on the jockey’s condition is not expected before Sunday.
In a statement released on Friday, the Injured Jockeys’ Fund said: “He remains in intensive care in a stable condition and his mother and sister are both with him. It is unlikely there will be a further update for 48 hours.”
In a tweet yesterday, York Racecourse said: “Our thoughts and best wishes are with Brian Toomey and his loved ones following [Thursday’s] horrible fall.”
“Everyone spare a thought for Brian Toomey. Really great lad who is loved by all especially in the weighroom”, said rider Aidan Coleman on Twitter, while Nick Scholfield tweeted: “Frightening news about Brian Toomey. In intensive care, thoughts are with him & his family #prayforbriantoomey”.
Toomey, who is attached to the yard of Kevin Ryan, a racehorse trainer in North Yorkshire, has ridden 49 winners since 2008, including three this season.
He has ridden for the trainer at the Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown festivals.
Toomey is the boyfriend of Ryan’s daughter Amy, a champion apprentice rider who visited him in hospital, along with his mother and sister.
Toomey was aboard Solway Dandy when the horse, the favourite for the race, fell as it approached the finishing straight.
Popular amateur jockey JT McNamara was paralysed after suffering spinal injuries in a fall at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
