Goodwood, England: The second day at Glorious Goodwood is highlighted by the £1 million (Dh4.8 million) Group 1 Sussex Stakes, one of British racing’s top mile races.

The event boasts a roster of great winners including the unbeaten Frankel and the Godolphin trio of Ramonti, Noverre and Aljabr.

This year’s renewal has typically attracted Europe’s best milers led by Godolphin’s Ribchester and dual Guineas hero Churchill, along with a strong supporting cast of seven other contenders.

Trained by Richard Fahey in North Yorkshire, Ribchester is already the winner of two Group 1s this season — the Lockinge at Newbury in May and Queen Anne at Royal Ascot this June.

An outstanding performer over the trip, Ribchester will hope to set the record straight following his third place finish behind The Gurkha and Galileo Gold in this contest twelve months ago.

Fahey, who is looking to win the Sussex Stakes for the first time, sounded confident ahead of Wednesday’s race in his column on the Sportinglife website.

“Everything has gone according to plan since Royal Ascot, there haven’t been any hiccups at all and we have no excuses,” he said.

“He was very good in the Queen Anne and I hope he’ll be just as good. He was touched off in the race last season and that means I’m confident he’ll handle the track perfectly well. We’re in a privileged position regarding the ground too. If there’s more rain he’ll handle the cut — if it dries out he’ll be fine too.

“It’s very rare a trainer can say that about any horse — let alone a top-class one,” he added.

“This is a big test for him though and I have an awful lot of respect for Churchill. He had excuses for his defeat in the St James’s Palace Stakes, it was one of the hottest days of the year, the ground was quick and I’m sure he’ll bounce back here.

“He represents a very tough rival — it’s a stiff ask for Ribchester but he’s answered all the questions we have put to him of late. Hopefully he can again.”

Fahey revealed that his second runner, Toscanini, is more likely to play the role of pacemaker.

“If he’s not leading they’re going very quickly — he’s in here to make sure it’s a good, even gallop for Ribchester,” he said.

The Sussex Stakes is supported by the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes — a five-furlong sprint for two-year-olds.

There are three runners in the race with Dubai connections.

To Wafi represents Major General Shaikh Ahmad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security, while Sound And Silence is Godolphin’s hopeful.

Saeed Suhail takes his chances with Invincible Army who is trained by James Tate.

The race was won last year by Yalta, who raced in the colours of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.

American raider Happy Fool, who was a runner-up in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, represents globe-trotting handler Wesley Ward and is the likely favourite.
